All Are Welcomed at the COMMÚNity Celebration!

Commún brought together the two things they do best—people and place—on Saturday, September 14 for a COMMÚNity Celebration in their now-vacant, soon-to-be-bustling community center on the Loretto Heights Campus.

The organization invited everyone, current community members and new friends alike, to visit the site of their new center in the historic Machebeuf Hall and celebrate one final time before the renovation begins next spring.

This year’s event was the second big bash the organization has thrown, following last year’s party in celebration of Commún’s purchase of the building from the Urban Land Conservancy. The 2024 celebration was attended by over 800 community members, including government officials, historic preservationists, funders, and neighbors.

Presented in partnership with Sheridan Rising Together for Equity and Kaizen Food Rescue, the lively event was held from 2–7 p.m. and included a community market and resource fair, food offerings by seven chefs from four countries, art activities for all ages, and performances by Syrian cultural dancers, a youth mariachi band, and a vibrant Andean/Latin band, D'Verzo Andino. The occasion doubled as a commemoration of Machebeuf Hall’s recent designation on the National Historic Registry. The designation will act to honor the site’s history, and releases close to $4.5 million in funding for Commún’s center.

“The event was designed to give people a chance to see the new building and have fun together,” says co-founding director Andrea Savage. “This building will be focused on entrepreneurship and small business growth, so we want to give our community a sneak peek at all the amazing skills we collectively have to share.”
