Tiny Homes: Women’s Village to Open

WV-Banner-CC.jpg

In early December, the Colorado Village Collaborative will open the doors of fourteen tiny homes to women who have been experiencing homelessness. Located at 38th Avenue between Gaylord and York Streets, these homes represent the safety and security of a warm bed and a locked door, behind which each woman can rest and begin to think about what’s next in her life. See recent write-up in Westword Magazine.

For several years, the Barton Institute has been supporting the potential of tiny homes as shelter for those experiencing homelessness, but who are not well-served by the traditional shelter system. The Institute has helped to build, move, and expand the Beloved Community Village, the first tiny homes village in Metro Denver, and has funded in-depth evaluations of the approach.

The most recent evaluation compared residents of the Beloved Community Village with people who didn’t get selected from the waiting list to be housed. Those on the waiting list are what researchers call a “control group.” Here are a couple of highlights:

  • Village residents were four times more likely to be employed or in school than the control group, and have been much more stable in terms of holding onto jobs following onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Researchers spoke with the neighbors of the village’s newest location in Globeville, and 86% of them said they are either neutral or positive about the Village overall.

Join us on Thursday, December 3 at 3:30 pm for a celebration of the Women’s Village, and to hear more about the evaluation from researchers at the University of Denver’s Center for Housing and Homelessness Research (CHHR). Register here.
