Colorado Safe Parking Initiative: Safety, stability, community

Colorado Safe Parking Initiative (CSPI) was formed to address the unique needs and realities of people who shelter in their vehicles during times of homelessness. CSPI operates a network of 13 SafeLots across five Denver Metro counties. SafeLots provide guests with a safe place to park overnight with toilet and hygiene facilities, and the opportunity to connect to services and gain stable housing.

75% of guests are newly homeless, usually less than one year. Every guest comes to a SafeLot with their own story to tell, like Jen, one of CSPI’s former guests. A retired college biology professor and high school teacher, at 74 Jen found herself without a home when her building was sold. As a person experiencing homelessness, Jen explains, “You just don’t belong anywhere.” But, she says, “Being in the SafeLot was like being home. It was wonderful because it was a community. It was a safe haven.” Jen has been securely housed in a senior living building for the last year. Yet she still keeps blankets in her car “just in case.”

Many SafeLot guests, like Jen, find themselves homeless later in life. In fact, of the 263 guests CSPI served last year. Each individual has walked a different path, but all need a stable, safe place to re-group, find community, and get on their feet. CSPI is proud to walk alongside them on their journey toward stability.
